My favorite conservative columnist, David Brooks, gives an eloquent answer. ”You should regard yourself as the sole author of all your future achievements and as the grateful beneficiary of all your past successes.”
Unmistakedly, I am the grateful beneficiary of so very many people, many financial and educational and social opportunities, moral and religious guidance, and the huge cloud of witnesses who applauded and booed at the right times.
The future? Mr. Brooks, I don’t want to go it alone.
